For those who missed the “huddled masses” allusion describing the mixed crowd at the François Hollande rally (below), this is the plaque at the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. Although the statue was given to the United States by France, the sentiments of this elegant sonnet are not widely felt nor understood by many of the French, nor, for that matter, by many Americans.
The New Collosus
Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
